This Saturday [February 16th], Merville United take on Dublin side Belvedere in the last 16 of the SFAI Cup. The game kicks off at 2pm in Saturday.
The under 14s have progressed to the last 16 of the competition after a trip to Waterford last month where they defeated Villa FC. It promises to be a great afternoon and we would encourage as many as possible to get down to the Merville pitch to support the Eddie, David and the team. Merville United wish to hold a cardiac screening clinic in Merville Community Centre on September 29th.
We are encouraging players, coaches, members and perhaps the local community to register for this worthwhile & comprehensive health check. The clinic will be open from 9:30am-5pm. Each screening will take approx. 20 minutes. Bookings can be made online. 1. Go to https://www.ameds.ie. 2. Click on the ‘Online Booking’ 3. Enter the clinic code 'merville' We are encouraging players, coaches, members and perhaps the local community to register for this worthwhile & comprehensive health check. Why undergo a Cardiac Screening? • Up to 100 young people die each year in Ireland from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) • 1 in 300 people may have a cardiac abnormality • The national register recently reported that the incidents of SADS are higher in Ireland than many other European countries. • In Italy cardiac screening is mandatory for anyone aged 12 to 35 years involved in competitive sport for the past 25 years. They have reduced the incidents of SADS by 89%. • The GAA’s Medical Scientific and Welfare Committee and the International Rugby Board recommend cardiac screening for all players over the age of 14 years • The European Society of Cardiology & the International Olympic Committee recommends cardiac screening. • The AMS service is based on the recommendations of the above named organisations.
Five Merville United Youth players tasted Inter-League success in Mullingar on Saturday (Feb 25th), winning the Under 15 SFAI Subway Championship.
Danny Kilcullen, Luke Moran, Cormac Niland, goal-keeper Kyle Wajszczuk and Ben Kelly were all members of the Sligo Leitrim squad who faced Cork Schoolboys in the final. The squad was coached by Merville's under 15 manager John McAteer who has previous SFAI success having last year guided his then under 14 Merville side to a Connacht Cup win. Kyle Wajszczuk made the step up to the Sligo Leitrim squad from Merville's under 14 team, coached by Benny O'Loughlin & Peadar Niland while the other 4 players are coached by John and Ger Canning at Merville. However, Luke Moran, Kyle Wajszczuk and Ben Kelly are all due to leave Merville shortly to join Sligo Rovers under 15 squad ahead of the forthcoming League of Ireland season.
Merville United's academy will return to action on Friday, January 26th in the Showgrounds.
The sessions will begin and finish at the same time as prior to the Christmas break; commencing at 5.45pm and finishing at 6.45pm. The academy is highly subscribed and will not be enrolling any more players for the duration of the season. |
