Merville Academy

The ‘Merville Academy’ is a community based Academy, operated by volunteers and made up of young Girls and Boys from across Sligo Town, from under 7’s through to Under 10’s. The Merville Academy itself is in ‘The Showgrounds’, the iconic home of Sligo Rovers FC, Friday evenings from 5:45pm to 6:45pm, September through to May.
The approach of the Academy programme is to provide a fun training environment, where all players train together, then typically participate in a match at the end of each session. Our goal is to get kids active, teach them new skills and teamwork and above all to have fun and enjoyment whilst learning to play football.
At the Academy our emphasis is on inclusivity and participation, whereby all girls and boys are included equally in all drills and games, regardless of their ability. The goal is to teach the kids, helping them to develop and improve as they progress through the age groups.
Importantly, the Academy allows children, their parents and their coaches to belong to a special community and social group, giving them an identity and a sense of belonging.
The Academy is the foundation on which Merville United Youths stands. This year the club and our Academy graduates have reaped the rewards throughout the Sligo/Leitrim youth leagues, across all age groups, most notably culminating in our u14’s winning the SFAI Connaught Cup.
At the Academy, the emphasis is not on winning when they are young – the point is to learn, improve and enjoy.....The winning will come!
