Two of Merville United's brightest prospects have made the step up to join the Sligo Rovers under 15 set up. Sean McAteer and Kailin Barlow will be playing their football across the road in the Showgrounds under the guidance of coaches Conor O'Grady, Marcel Gordon and Paul Masterson. Both players have proven their ability with Merville's 14 side this season, having helped secure the league title and claiming the under 14 SFAI Connacht Cup. Sligo Rovers will be gaining two excellent players of differing style; Kailin is developing into a powerful attacking midfielder known from his goalscoring ability while Sean's excellent technical ability on the ball makes him stand out from the crowd. Both players will join up with the Sligo Leitrim squad that travel to take part in the Kennedy Cup in Limerick in June. From all at Merville Untied, we wish Sean and Kailin the very best of luck in their move to the Showgrounds. The club held it's annual awards evening on Saturday May 27th in Merville Community Centre where Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Mícháel Schlingermann was our special guest. 2016/17 was a hugely successful season for the club with league wins for our under 12s, under 13s and under 14 Blues and a Shield win for our under 14 white team – with the under 14s also winning the Connacht SFAI Cup. This year's ceremony saw the inaugural awarding of the Austie Langan Academy Player of the Year Trophy. The trophy is to honour the memory of the club's former Treasurer and Academy Director, Austin Langan who passed away earlier this year. The award was presented on the day to academy player Sean Kelly by Austie's brother Tony and Mícháel Schlingermann. Two players received special medals as they were squad members of the under 12, 13 and 14 sides who had league success, they were Ronan Niland and Shea O'Neill. Awards were also presented to two Merville players who are progressing their careers and moving across the road to the Showgrounds. Sean McAteer and Kailin Barlow recently signed with Sligo Rovers under 15 set up and both players were presented with plagues to mark their progression. The club wish both players the very best with Sligo Rovers. The club also recognised the work of Carl Gethins for this significant effort in maintaining and managing the grass pitch at Merville. The pitch is recognised as one of the best surfaces to play football on in the Sligo/Leitrim district and Merville are grateful for the work carried out by Carl.
